To be listened to well is a gift. When a friend listens to you deeply and makes you feel heard, and understood, it’s powerful. People pay money to be listened to in counselling. This is so because God has made us to be listened to. God Himself listens to our prayers. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said “The first service that one owes to others in the fellowship consists in listening to them. Just as love to God begins with listening to His Word, so the beginning of love for the brethren is learning to listen to them.” So, this message explores the intersection between listening to people, listening to God, and listening to God through people. If I don’t listen to people well, I generally don’t listen to God well either. And if I don’t have the humility to listen to people and God, I generally won’t be able to listen to God through people. Your best and worst decision are all related to how you listen to people, God, and to God through people.
